Beeldschone zolder van IJsfontein op Marineterrein

ME Interior Photography heeft de zolder van IJsfontein (een bedrijf gespecialiseerd in spelend (digitaal) leren) in gebouw 024 op het Marineterrein gefotografeerd. De verbouwing is mijns inziens zeer geslaagd!

Historische scheepswerven terug op Marineterrein

Scheepswerf Admiraliteit
Een van de studentenontwerpen voor het Marineterrein die me het meest aanspreekt is die van Joran Lammers van Wageningen Universiteit. Hij maakte in het kader van zijn Bachelor-scriptie Landschapsarchitectuur een ontwerp waarbij de oude scheepswerven van de Admiraliteit, die ooit op Kattenburg de marinevloot voortbrachten, herleven. Hij situeert enkele boogvormige woonblokken (ze lijken vanaf de waterzijde enigszins op de Markthal in Rotterdam) op precies dezelfde plek waar de 'bijltjes van Kattenburg" ooit aan de schepen werkten. De boogvorm verwijst naar overdekte scheepsdokken.
Verder wordt in het ontwerp het terrein weer grotendeels in de oude vorm teruggebracht met een groot wateroppervlak in het midden. In de jaren zestig is dit gedeelte van het Marine-etablissement namelijk gedempt om het door de bouw van de IJ-tunnel verloren grondoppervlak te compenseren.



Baai van Kattenburg
Er ontstaat een weids uitzicht over "de baai van Kattenburg" met een licht oplopende waterkant in de oosthoek. Hierdoor krijgt de natuur de vrije hand, alhoewel een constante muggenplaag door zo'n 'moeras' wel op de loer ligt.
Toch lijkt het ontwerp me weinig realistisch door de plaatsing vlak naast het Scheepvaartmuseum en het grote verlies van kostbare grond. Ook is weinig tot geen verbinding met de al bestaande woningen aan de oostkant van Kattenburg. Wellicht is een andere plek op het terrein, bijvoorbeeld aan de spoorkant, geschikter. Maar dan is het effect van de baai natuurlijk compleet verdwenen.

Duurzaam badhuis op Marineterrein

Fallon Walton is een Canadees ontwerper die op dit moment bezig is met haar afstudeerproject op de TU Delft. Ze maakte een ontwerp voor een badhuis op het Marineterrein dat op duurzame wijze gebruik maakt van GFT-afval voor de verwarming van het water. Daarnaast maakt ze gebruik van de haven als openbare zwemplek. Het hergebruik van enkele gebouwen van de voormalige verbindingsschool staat centraal. Voor de duidelijkheid: dit is een ontwerp in het kader van een afstudeeropdracht en wordt niet uitgevoerd.

Een van de mooiste badhuizen van Amsterdam stond ooit dicht in de buurt van het Marine-Etablissement op de rand van Wittenburg en was gebouwd in de Amsterdamse Schoolstijl (zie foto onderaan artikel). Door de rigoureuze sloopwoede in de jaren zestig is ook dit monumentale gebouw jammer genoeg verdwenen. Gelukkig is hergebruik van vastgoed tegenwoordig meer gangbaar.




Op haar website legt Wallon uit wat haar uitgangspunten voor het ontwerp zijn:

Objective: To imagine social public program & energy production as contributing to valuable urban social space on the Marineterrein and the greater urban fabric.

Design Question: How can the integration of energy production from food waste and a public bathhouse become a cohesive design? How can it facilitate social connections on the Marineterrein & accommodate future visions for the site?

Technical Question: How can the flows of food waste, energy, and water be locally managed and integrated into the design of a public bathhouse?

This year the City of Amsterdam commissioned the report, ‘Circular Amsterdam,’ which highlights the untapped potential of food waste as a valuable source of energy and a link to a more circular economy. Concurrently, Amsterdam’s Marineterrein is transitioning from a restricted naval site to public space. The city is looking for ways to connect the Marineterrein to the urban fabric, draw on its historical identity and connection to water, and include smart energy infrastructure and a ‘circular city’ approach. My objective is to combine the management of food waste and public water leisure program of a bathhouse as a way to re-imagine energy production as contributing to valuable urban social space on the Marineterrein. The research, thus far, investigates the existing flow of food waste, energy and water in Amsterdam. Using the knowledge and criticisms of the existing situation, innovative and alternative techniques are explored to better integrate and optimize the flows of food waste, energy, and water into the design of a bathhouse. The proposed techniques to manage waste, energy, and water flows along with the size of the bathhouse programs and user capacity are combined to determine the spatial implications as well as the larger urban impact of the results.

Verlichting en lente op Marineterrein

Twee keer per maand wordt in café Daan & Daan op het Kattenburgerplein het Veteranencafé gehouden. Veel oud-marinemensen die daar komen hebben gediend op het Marine-Etablissement op Kattenburg. En niet iedereen is er even blij mee dat de marine het terrein gaat verlaten. Veteraan Wim Degen (ex-Hofmeester 1, Koninklijke Marine) schreef een nostalgisch gedicht met een waarschuwing!

Een theater in de haven van het Marineterrein

In de serie studentenontwerpen voor het Marineterrein kunnen we inmiddels weer aan een nieuwe reeks beginnen. Ik heb alle ontwerpen van de studenten van Wageningen Universiteit nog niet eens besproken, of er is al weer een nieuwe lichting studenten van de TU Delft met inspirerende ideeën voor het terrein. Hieronder het ontwerp van Marta Meijer voor een (tijdelijk) openluchttheater in de haven. Erg mooi en licht. Iconisch, maar zonder arrogantie. Van mij mag het zo uitgevoerd worden!



Uit haar scriptie:

This design is one solution to two problem statements. The first is within the social context of theatre. It is a new kind of theatre with the aim to attract a broad audience to a unique theatre experience. Previous examples, such as the Dutch musical “Soldaat van Oranje” with its rotating auditiorium, prove that these kinds of spectacular shows attract many people. Not only the usual theatre visitors, but even more people get in touch with the world of theatre. This is financially good for theatres in the Netherlands in general. The toolkit, as developed during the research phase, can be applied to many more theatres in the future, to give them something extra that adds value to the cultural experience.

This new experiment in the theatre typology not only gives a new experience to the visitor, of an open-air theatre in the old harbours of Amsterdam, but also a new method of making theatre for directors and theatre companies. It provides the artistic freedom to help the art of theatre develop and make the creators explore all the possibilities of telling a story.

Not only is it valuable for the world of theatre, it also is a cultural catalyst for the urban regeneration of the Marineterrein. People who will visit the theatre and come to the Marineterrein maybe for the first time. At the same time, it is a perfect showcase for the intended innovation island. It shows that the Marineterrein is a place for experimenting and exploring innovative ideas. 

My project is a design for the Marineterrein and the city of Amsterdam, adding a new typology to the many theatres in the city with new means to create innovative theatre shows. The result is a win-win situation: it aims to attract a broader audience to theatre shows and at the same time it will get people to the Marineterrein and make it more known to the residents and visitors of Amsterdam, so people can see the beauty of this place. The floating theatre will take the area out of its isolation.

The result is an innovative concept for a theatre, floating and flexible: a true experiment in theatre typology.

The Amsterdam Beerfair 2017 van 8 t/m 10 september op Marineterrein

In september organiseert Homeland Brewery voor de tweede keer The Amsterdam Beerfair (TAB) op het Marineterrein. Het festival zal plaatsvinden van 8 t/m 10 september (tijdens de open dagen van het Marineterrein). Deze keer ben ik zeker van de partij! In onderstaande video kun je zien dat er in 2016 sprake was van een prima sfeer!
