The proposal for Amsterdam Artist Community is based on the idea that Art can
enhance the quality and attractiveness of living environments. Inspiration came from
sources as varied as the canals of Venice in Los Angeles to dense residential artist-
neighborhoods in South East Asia.
Numerous studies were made to investigate how a mix of art, art institutions,
artist workshops and housing could work. Solutions with large scale art institutions
concentrated along Kattenburgerstraat or interspersed throughout the entire site were
abandoned for a much smaller scale approach. A seemingly arbitrary grid is projected
over the site allowing for the creation of public, semi-private and private spaces. The
positioning of art follows the same gradient: from public civic art accessible for all, to the
private workshop of the artist.
This proposal includes a typological study of housing types. Density and the ratio
between infrastructure, public space and private land have been studied in order to
clarify and quantify the development potential of the Marine Etablissement.
